How to Prepare for a Volleyball Tournament?

Playing a volleyball tournament is surely a matter of pride for every participant. But what if that event turns out to be an absolute blunder just because of wrong preparation?

Prepare for the volleyball tournament with a well-balanced physical training and bringing yourself in rhythm by making your muscles game-ready and taking good care of your dietary needs. Then comes the mental preparation followed by a highly disciplined schedule of your daily routine in the build up of the tournament.

Here are all the steps of how to get ready for a volleyball tournament.

Understanding the Tournament Structure to Determine Your Preparation Method

The first thing that you need to do is to see the type of volleyball tournament you are going to play.

It will help you take your preparation in the right direction. While this may seem part of strategic planning, it is equally important for individual players to have a deep understanding of the format since it will dictate how they should plan their preparation.

I have covered the workings of volleyball tournaments that will give you an idea of what to expect in different tournament types.

Physical Preparation: Bringing Your Body in “Volleyball Shape”

When you are stepping in a volleyball tournament, you are signing up for a challenging endeavor.

So, you need to get yourself ready for a demanding time ahead.

If you are aiming to win a tournament, you will need to play at least 4 to 5 games (this is only for a single elimination round. Other formats will require more and more games.)

This means that you need that stamina to get the job done to reach that ultimate prize.

The last thing you would want is to get out of breath during each and every rally of a tournament game.

As you get ready to show a burst of energy in every rally game after game, physical fitness becomes non-negotiable, which makes the following exercise important before tournament.

Cardiovascular Endurance

To increase your cardiovascular endurance for your dream spikes and dives and to increase stamina to last through potentially long matches, you will need to incorporate activities like running, cycling, or even swimming into your routine.

These activities not only boost your heart rate but also increase your staying power on the court.

Aim for a mix of steady-state cardio and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to mirror the game’s rhythm.

A 30-minute daily routine for these activities will take you there.

Strength Training

Looking at an intense volleyball game, explosive jumps and swift movements seem like the stuff of dreams. But that dream will only be a pipe dream if you do not work on your strength training.

That is why focusing on exercises that enhance your core strength, leg power, and upper body resilience becomes important.

In order to increase your strength training, squats, lunges, overhead presses, and core workouts should be staples in your exercise routine in the buildup of a volleyball tournament.

Flexibility and Agility

Flexibility and agility make the difference between a good volleyball player and a great one. Incorporating yoga, dynamic stretching, and agility drills improves your range of motion and reduces the risk of injuries.

Drills that mimic volleyball movements, like lateral shuffles and plyometric jumps, are especially beneficial for an intense volleyball tournament.

They enhance your body’s ability to move quickly and efficiently, two core traits that you will be needing rigorously in your volleyball tournament.

Training Routines

As your volleyball tournament comes near, developing a balanced training routine that incorporates all these aforementioned cardio and strength exercises is the gateway to excellence.

But I have always advised players not to go too hard on these exercises as they will only burn them out.

Gradually increasing the intensity and duration of your workouts in the days before the tournament is the way to go.

Most importantly, listen to your body, as rest and recovery are as vital as the training itself.

While you are on a rigorous training routine, it’s important to take good care of what you are eating, which brings us to our next point: What to eat in the lead-up to the volleyball tournament?

Fueling Yourself: Dietary Needs for Your Volleyball Tournament

For players in a hurry, here is a week-long meal plan that will take care of your dietary needs and get you ready for the challenging tournament ahead.

However, if you have a good amount of time left in the tournament, start a well-established meal routine that has to have the following components:

  • Macronutrient Balance: Your diet should be a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Carbohydrates are crucial for energy, so include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in your meals. Proteins are essential for muscle repair and growth, which means that you should think of lean meats, fish, eggs, and plant-based sources like beans and lentils. Healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and olive oil are also important.
  • Pre-Game Meals: Before a match, focus on easily digestible foods rich in carbohydrates for a quick energy boost. A moderate amount of protein and low-fat content is advisable to avoid digestive discomfort.
  • Post-Game Recovery: After a match, consume a combination of carbohydrates and protein to replenish energy stores and aid in muscle recovery. A meal or snack within 30 minutes to an hour after a game is ideal.
  • Consistent Meal Timing: Regular meal times aid in maintaining energy levels throughout the day. Avoid large meals right before training sessions or games.

To keep your hydration needs in balance, focus on:

  • Getting hydrated throughout the day leading up to the match.
  • Keeping a water bottle courtside and taking small sips during breaks in the game. If playing multiple matches in a day or in hot conditions, consider a sports drink to replenish electrolytes.
  • Rehydrating after the game to replace fluid loss. The amount will vary depending on the intensity of the game and environmental conditions.

But having good physical conditioning and diet will take you nowhere as long as you are not sharpening your skills.

Look,

The body has to come in what my colleague describes as a “Volleyball rhythm.”

Irrespective of your skill level, if you are not practicing in the buildup of the tournament, things will eventually go south.

So, hit the court and bring your body back to the volleyball rhythm.

Imagine different scenarios that you will face in the tournament, and then start practicing for it.

To get in that volleyball rhythm, here are the tips:

Sharpening the Saw and Honing Your Skills

Yes, serving, passing, setting. Spiking, and blocking all things are important, but that all depends upon your specific position on the court. Isn’t it?

This goes without saying that you need to master all the aspects of your playing position before going to the tournament.

So irrespective of what your position is, just revise all the essentials to get back in the volleyball rhythm before the tournament.

Apart from sharpening the skill set before the big event, here are some strategic tips to get ready for the big day.

Tips for Effective Practice Sessions:

  • Set Clear Objectives: Before each practice session, have specific skills or scenarios you want to focus on. This ensures your practice is purposeful and maximizes improvement in whatever position you play.
  • Use Game-Like Drills: Incorporate drills that mimic actual game situations. This will not only improve your skills but also enhance your decision-making under pressure.
  • Quality Over Quantity: It is not about how many hours you spend on the court but how effectively you use that time. Focus on performing each drill with the proper technique, even if it means reducing the number of repetitions or the length of the session.
  • Seek Feedback: Regularly get feedback from coaches or experienced players. Video analysis is also a valuable tool to understand and improve your technique just before the tournament.

How to Mentally Prepare for a Volleyball Tournament

As you tick all the boxes in physical preparation and sort out your dietary needs, it’s time to take your game to the next level.

This phase is called the mental preparation phase and is usually considered the most important part of the tournament preparation.

Over the years of coaching volleyball, I have seen countless exceptional players crumbling down under real tournament pressure, even though they were far more skilled than their opponents. The shaking legs, the disbelief, and the lack of mental strength all contribute to this crumbliness.

This means that every participating player should be mentally prepared in the following ways as they get ready for the volleyball tournament.

Develop a Positive Mindset: Fake it Till you Make it

During your preparation, always visualize successful plays and winning games.

Visualize the vibe that comes with winning the tournament and think of that wild celebration that you are gonna make after lifting the trophy. This positive visualization helps build confidence and reduces anxiety.

Overcome Negative Thoughts

There is one thing that all players need to understand: losing the tournament will never be the end of the world. Yes, it is true that it hurts for the time being, but the world does not stop here. Time moves on and will land you in another tournament sometime where you can easily learn from your previous mistakes to win the glory.

Once you understand this, every negative thought will become secondary.

Recognize and challenge any negative thoughts or doubts. Yes, this is easier said than done. But this is what it is.

Replace them with constructive, affirming beliefs about your abilities and preparation. This can be done by applying time-tested techniques that keep athletes away from negativity.

Get a Break

You may reach a time when you will be practcing too much. In such scnerios, getting yourself a complete break or finding fun volleyball games becomes a great way to get rid of the pattern that will burn you out otherwise.

Set Realistic Goals

Yes, a title win hits differently, but over-optimism can lead to unrealistic goals sometimes. I have seen teams registering for high-level tournaments without evaluating their skill levels, only to be knocked out in the very first round.

That is why setting realistic goals is important. While you always need to go for the kill, getting a better version of yourself compared to the previous games is also a fine achievement. This way, you will not overburden yourself, which is also a big mental win and will help you in your tournament games.

Focus on Process Over Outcome

While winning is the ultimate goal, concentrate on the process of improving skills, teamwork, and strategy. Think of it this way: Is your team making progress as a whole in your tournament? Are you making progress in your role in the team, and are you on the way to achieving visionary volleyball goals?

Stress Management Techniques

Some mental exercises are exceptionally important while stepping into the volleyball tournament. These exercises include:

Breathing Exercises: Learn and practice deep breathing techniques to manage stress and maintain composure during critical moments in the game.

Mindfulness and Meditation: Regular practice of mindfulness and meditation enhances focus, reduces stress levels, and improves overall mental clarity.

Concentration Drills: Engage in exercises that enhance your ability to concentrate under pressure. This could include practicing skills while in a distracting environment or using concentration grids that will help you keep in the present moment.

Stay in the Moment: Practice focusing on the present moment during games and not getting distracted by past mistakes or future outcomes.

Team Communication and Support: Maintain open and supportive communication with teammates and coaches. Discuss fears, anxieties, and strategies openly. There are many proven communication drills for volleyball that will help you along the way.

Team Bonding Activities: Participate in team-building activities to strengthen bonds and build trust within the team.

Handling Pressure and Setbacks

Having pressure all around before the big tournament is an absolutely normal thing. But that can be tackled if you view pressure situations as opportunities to demonstrate your skills and preparation.

One of the most important mental capacity-building strategies that I have come across over the years is to practice in a game-like situation.

You know that you will be playing the tournament games in the intense noise of the audience and other external elements. So, you need to mimic that in your practices as well. For that, playing the pre-recorded random voices of the crowd on a sound system in the background of your practice sessions is a great way to go.

Develop Pre-Game Routines

Establish a consistent pre-game routine to help you get into the right mental state for the game. Starting from one week before the volleyball tournament, bring your sleep cycle in a consistent pattern and stop eating any useless stuff.

You won’t find it directly, but these are the things that convert the “nice try” chants into “what a shot” chants during the games.

Practice in a Real-Game Atmosphere to Get that Feel

Another most important thing that I have been advising athletes over the years is to practice with the exact volleyball type that is going to be used in the tournament.

You will agree with me that different volleyballs feel different on your hands, so practicing with the right type of volleyball will help you get used to the actual game situation.

Getting Your Bag Ready

Start preparing your tournament bag a couple of days before going to the event. And each and everything should be finalized a night before the tournament.

If you leave packing the bag on the morning of the big day, you are inviting trouble.

In a hurry, you will always leave some important things behind, which will certainly cost you at some point. So why not pack each and everything before sleeping for the tournament day?

Reach Your Venue Before Time

Never underestimate the importance of reaching the tournament venue well before time.

You need to acclimatize with the court environment and observe the calm before the storm to get yourself completely ready for the game.

Stretching and bringing yourself into that “volleyball rhythm” on the game day more than your competitors will truly stand you out of the crowd.

Final Words

Your tournament preparation will become unbeatable if you see things from organizers perspective. Like how do they plan a volleyball event? This will help you a fair idea of what to expect during a tournament. Not to mention that some volleyball organizers also try to incorporate innovative ideas to make their tournament look different. Getting yourself familiar with these ideas is also a great way to see things from organizers point of view.
